It has been reported that a group of MPs of the United Kingdom have called on the government to boost broadband for the rural communities of the country in a bankbench business motion that was heard in the Commons.

Incidentally, a total of 105 Members of Parliament had signed a motion that called for action to countering the digital divide, which still was seeing a great number of isolated areas with pathetically slow broadband. This move by the MPs had been a well-supported and surprisingly specific call to arms.

The signatoried had argued that not only were te broadband services were lagging behind, but even the mobile data and voice services were found to be inadequate.

This reportedly has been the reason for the group’s urging the government of the United Kingdom to make the telecommunications regulator, Ofcom impose a broader coverage obligation for the licence of the 800MHz spectrum when the auction for the 4G licence starts next year.

According to the argument of the MPs 4G broadband technology could be used for delivering mobile broadband signl to the rural areas, providing it was made widely available by the mobile spectrum holders.

As of now, the regulator anticipates the fixing of a 95 per cent minimum limit, although this would apply only to a single licence owner, out of the entire major mobile network operators.
